1984년 닌텐도의 사내 인물이 창립. 초창기에는 닌텐도 게임의 프로그래밍 하청을 맡는 등 다양한 분야로 활약하고 있었다. 이후 카가 쇼조를 영입, 1989년에는 대표작이 되는 파이어 엠블렘를 개발했다. 이후에도 닌텐도 관련의 다양한 프로그래밍 작업을 맡고 있다. 다만 재정적으로는 분리된 관계.

달고나 11. 인텔리전트 시스템
딥러닝, AI, 빅데이터, IoT, 오토파일럿 (자율주행) 등과 같은 개념이나 기술이 일반화되면서 이들이 종합적으로 적용된 인텔리전트 시스템 (Intelligent System)도 최근에 등장한 개념으로 생각할 수 있다. 하지만 인텔리전트 시스템에 관한 연구는 꽤 오래전부터 진행됐고 개념이 — 물론 새로운 아디이어가 나오면서 꾸준히 진화하고 있지만 — 정립된지도 꽤 오래됐다. 나중에 산업경영공학과로 개명했지만 학부 전공은 산업공학이었고, 자연스레 대학원은 생산공학 연구실로 진학했다. 이후 인터넷 환경이 일반화되고 데이터 마이닝 관련 커리큘럼이 학과에 보강되면서 인터넷과 머신러닝이 주 연구 주제가 됐다. 정확한 교과목 명은 기억나지 않지만 2000년도에 대학원에 들어갔을 때 지도교수님은 인텔리전트 시스템에 관한 교과목을 개설했었다. 지도 교수님의 전공이 생산공학이었기에 강의는 공장을 비롯한 생산공정에서의 인텔리전스에 집중했다. 당시 배웠던/들었던 대부분을 까먹었지만 이후에 연구하거나 업무 하는데 생각의 틀을 잡아둔 두 가지 개념은 여전히 기억하고 있다. 하나는 다음 글로 미뤄두고, 다른 하나는 인텔리전트 시스템의 구성에 관한 거다.
아래에 간단하게 그렸지만 인텔리전트 시스템은 크게 1) 모니터링/센싱, 2) 디시전 메이커, 그리고 3) 실행으로 구성된다. 이런 개념이 최근에 정립된 것처럼 보일 수도 있지만 실은 1980년대, 어쩌면 그전에 정립된 개념으로 요즘도 여전히 유효하다. 오늘날에는 특히 디시전 메이커, AI에 많은 관심이 집중되고 있지만, 시스템이 진정 지능을 갖기 위해서는 디시전을 위해 데이터를 수집하는 부분과 디시전 이후에 실행하고 제어하는 부분이 모두 갖춰져야 한다. 자율주행 Auto Pilot을 예로 들면, Ridar나 카메라로 도로의 다양한 상황을 계속 모니터링하고, 딥러닝 기반으로 객체를 인식해서 다음으로 어떤 액션을 할지를 결정하고, 전기 신호를 보내서 브레이커를 밟거나 핸들을 틀어주는 제어가 모두 갖춰져야 자율주행이 가능하다.
이런 인텔리전트 시스템과 구성에 관해 잘 정리된 논문이 1991년에 나왔다는 것이 여전히 놀랍다. 20년 전에 공부할 때도 요즘의 모습을 제대로 상상하지 못했는데, 요즘 실생활에서 접하는 많은 기기들의 프레임워크는 30년 전에 정리됐고, 어쩌면 4~50년 전부터 이런 연구가 진행됐다는 것은 여전히 경이롭다. 때론 당장 불필요해 보이지만 먼 미래의 언젠가 우리 삶에 필요한 것을 제공할 기초 연구의 필요성과 중요성을 새삼 깨닫게 된다. 논문은 NIST의 James Albus가 1991년에 낸 ‘Outline for a Theory of Intelligence’이다. 논문은 37페이지로 상당히 긴 편에 속한다. 끝까지 읽었는지 아니면 중간에 포기했는지 기억은 가물가물하지만 2000년도 이후로 생각날 때마다 여러 번 읽기를 시도했었다. 어제 문득 이 논문이 다시 생각났다. 이외에도 인텔리전스 시스템을 소개한 많은 논문/연구가 있는데 용어/표현이 조금 다를 걸 제외하면 인텔리전스 시스템을 구성하는 요소는 모두 같다.

최근 주목받은 많은 개념이나 기기의 발전을 인텔리전트 시스템 측면에서 본다면 그 중요성과 의미를 쉽게 알 수 있다. 센싱과 모니터링은 각종 IoT 기기들과 (빅)데이터 처리 기술이, 디시전 메이킹은 딥러닝과 AI 알고리즘들이, 그리고 실행은 로봇과 정밀 제어 기술이 담당한다. 인터넷 서비스에서는 실행이 디시전 메이킹과 다소 모호하고 겹치는 부분이 있다. … 기계가 생각할 수 있을까? 는 오래된 질문이다. 만약 그런 기계가 등장한다면 저 구조에서 크게 벗어나지 않을 거다.
데이터 사이언티스트가 굳이 이런 논문도 읽어야 하나?라고 반문할 수 있다. 나의 답변은 더 넓게 보라는 거다. 시스템의 전체를 봐야 한다. 데이터 분석과 기계학습은 우리가 만들어갈 시스템, 서비스의 일부에 불과하다. 더 큰 시스템 또는 생태계 내에서의 데이터 사이언스를 고민해야 한다. 데이터가 수집되는 과정과 실제 제어가 이뤄지는 것을 고려하지 않고 그냥 조금 더 정확한 모델만 구축한다고 해서 모든 문제가 해결되지 않는다. 이 전 글에서도 밝혔지만 예측 모델은 추론 inference를 위한 것이고, 이 추론도 결국 제어 Control를 위한 거다. 대학원에서 기업체 프로젝트를 진행하며 Model Predictive Contrl이란 개념을 자연스레 익힌 것은 운이 좋았다. 그때는 뚜렷하고 명시적이지 않았지만 여러 잡다한 것들을 보고 듣고 익힌 후에 데이터 분석과 기계학습을 익힌 것을 다행이라 생각한다. 산업공학을 전공하면서 산업통계, OR, 회귀분석 등을 조금 더 일찍 접한 것도 다행이었다. 처음부터 딥러닝 또는 데이터 사이언스에 꽂혀서 달리는 이들에 비해서 기술적으론 부족해도 더 넓은 시야로 문제를 종합적으로 볼 수 있게 된 것은 아무런 연관성이 없어 보이는 다양한 주제를 의도했든 안 했든 익혔기 때문이라 생각한다. 몰론 스스로 정리하고 종합하는 능력도 함양해야 한다. 개별의 잡다한 것들을 익힌다고 저절로 다 연결되는 것은 아니다.
잡설이 좀 길었다. 오늘은 인텔리전트 시스템을 다룬 저 논문을 소개하고 싶었다. 혹시 더 잘 정리된 자료가 있으면 알려주시면 감사하겠습니다.

NISSAN Intelligent Key® (if so equipped)
With the Intelligent Key in your pocket or purse, you can lock or unlock all doors, as well as the liftgate — and start the engine.
To unlock the vehicle, push the Request Switch on any door handle. That door will now unlock. Push the switch again within one minute, to unlock all doors, including the liftgate. To lock your vehicle, push the Request Switch on either of the front doors or the liftgate once. These lock and unlock functions are operational when the Intelligent Key is within about 2 1⁄2 feet of the corresponding request switch.
With your NISSAN Intelligent Key® on your person, enter the driver’s seat and depress the brake pedal on Continuously Variable Transmission models, or the clutch pedal on models equipped with a Manual Transmission. Then push the ignition switch to turn the engine ON. If the brake pedal or the clutch pedal is not depressed when you push the ignition switch, pushing the switch once will activate the accessory mode, or ACC. Push it twice for ON and three times to return to OFF.
The Intelligent Key is also equipped with all the functions of the Remote Keyless Entry system for operating door locks. For full details, please go to the Remote Keyless Entry Chapter or refer to your Owner’s Manual.
In a rare instance when your Intelligent Key battery is discharged, you can still use the Mechanical Key to lock or unlock the vehicle, and start the engine. You will find the Mechanical Key concealed on the back of the Intelligent Key. To remove it, release the LOCK knob on the back of the Intelligent Key and slide the Mechanical Key out. Then insert the Mechanical Key into the key cylinder on the driver’s door to lock or unlock the vehicle.
Your Intelligent Key can also be used to adjust the hazard indicator and horn beep features. Please refer to your Owner’s Manual for complete information on adjusting these features.
The Intelligent Key contains sensitive electrical components. Please avoid these circumstances that could affect its operation
– Avoid dropping or striking it against another object.
– Keep away from water.

인텔리전트(지능형) 시스템이 산업용 컴퓨팅 시장에서 신성장동력으로 떠오르고 있다. 스마트시티, 클라우드 네트워크 등 정보통신기술(ICT)을 활용해 공공·산업 기능을 하나로 연결하는 커넥티드 디바이스 시장이 급성장하면서 네트워크를 효율적으로 관리하기 위한 인텔리전트 시스템의 필요성이 대두되고 있기 때문이다.
지난 20일부터 나흘간 중국 쑤저우 일대에서 개최된 `어드밴텍 월드파트너 콘퍼런스(WPC)`에 참가한 체니 호 어드밴텍 최고경영자(CEO)는 “모바일기기, 클라우드 컴퓨팅, 빅데이터 등 첨단 기술이 확산되면서 세계 커넥티드 디바이스 시장 규모는 오는 2020년 400억대를 웃돌 것으로 전망된다”며 “이를 네트워크화하기 위해서는 현재보다 50억대가량 많은 컴퓨터가 필요할 것으로 예측되기 때문에 연결·관리·보안 기능을 강화한 인텔리전트 시스템은 필수”라고 말했다.
WPC는 어드밴텍이 각국 지사, 협력사, 고객사, 언론사 등을 초청해 시장 정보를 공유하는 행사다. `스마트시티와 사물인터넷 솔루션을 위한 협력(Prartnering for Smart City & IoT Solution)`을 주제로 진행된 올해는 7개 섹터 콘퍼런스, 8개 세미나에서 인텔리전트 시스템을 주제로 다양한 의견을 교환했다. 세계 각국에서 온 참가자 500여명은 관심 분야를 선택해 자유롭게 패널 토의에 참여했다.
`클라우드 시대 탐험(Exploring the Cloud Era)`을 주제로 세미나를 진행한 피터 마렉 어드밴텍 네트워크·커뮤니케이션 그룹 시니어 디렉터는 “산업 시장에서 가상 클라우드·클라우드 네트워크 등이 확산되면서 데이터를 안전하게 관리하기 위한 인텔리전트 솔루션 수요가 증가할 것”이라고 내다봤다.
어드밴텍은 WPC에서 최근 신축한 중국 `임베디드 R&D 디자인-인 센터(Embedded R&D Design-in Center)를 공개하며 독자 개발한 인텔리전트 디스플레이 패널 3종도 첫선을 보였다.
광시야각(IPS) 기술을 탑재한 19인치 크기 의료용 LED 패널 `IDK-1119MD`, 풀HD(1920×1080) 해상도를 구현한 21인치 크기 게임용 터치 모니터 `IDS-3121GD`, 16:3·16:4.5로 가로 비율을 극대화해 광고·게임 등에 활용할 수 있는 와이드 디스플레이 `DSD-5000` 등 이다.
회사는 인텔리전트 시스템 기술을 기반으로 기존 스마트시티, 산업용 PC 시장은 물론이고 의료, 게임, 광고 등 새로운 시장에서 또 다른 먹거리를 찾는다는 전략이다.
어드밴텍 관계자는 “시장조사업체 IHS에 따르면 인텔리전트 디스플레이 시장은 오는 2017년까지 연평균 10%씩 성장할 것으로 전망된다”며 “LCD 패널, 터치 패널, 광고 보드 등 다양한 제품군과 차별화된 기술력으로 세계 시장을 선도할 것”이라고 말했다.

What is an intelligent system?
An intelligent system is an advanced computer system that can gather, analyze and respond to the data it collects from its surrounding environment. It can work and communicate with other agents, such as users or other computer systems. It can also learn from experience and adapt according to current data. An intelligent system might also support remote monitoring and management.
There is no single definition for an intelligent system. The term is applied in different ways by various sources. For example, a Roomba vacuum is often referred to as an intelligent system. However, some could argue that its limited capacity to learn, such as its inability to avoid the same obstacle, disqualifies it from this category. On the other hand, most would consider a self-driving car to be an intelligent system or a valid attempt at an intelligent system.
Most consider driverless cars to be intelligent systems.
There is no single standard that defines an intelligent system. It is often determined by degrees of intelligence rather than a checklist of characteristics. Martin Molina, a professor in the department of artificial intelligence at the Technical University of Madrid, offered the following description of an intelligent system in his paper “What is an intelligent system?” (published February 2022):
An intelligent system (1) operates in an environment with other agents, (2) possesses cognitive abilities such as perception, action control, deliberative reasoning or language use, (3) follows behavioral principles based on rationality and social norms and (4) has the capacity to adapt through learning.
Molina added that his definition should not be taken as a “rigid characterization to determine whether a system is intelligent or not.” Instead, the definition outlined the usual characteristics that might be present in an intelligent system. For example, a system might be considered intelligent if it has perception and can control action, even if it doesn’t possess deliberative reasoning or a capacity to learn.
He further stated that the “concept of intelligent system has emerged in information technology as a type of system derived from successful applications of artificial intelligence.” In fact, AI is commonly cited as a central characteristic of any intelligent system. Molina also said that one of the most important aspects in the construction of an intelligent system is the selection of AI methods which provide the system with the cognitive abilities necessary to function as a complete system.
Some believe the intelligent systems should include AI methods that provide them with cognitive abilities to function as complete systems.
However, an intelligent system is not the same thing as AI, although the terms are sometimes used interchangeably. With AI, computers and other machines attempt to simulate human intelligence, but its presence does not automatically imply an intelligent system. For example, a computer running an AI-based application does not mean that the computer itself is an intelligent system, although it might contribute to such a system as one of its agents.
