· Fog(안개)는 구름과 같지만 지면에 접해 있는 것을 안개라고 합니다.
· 클라우드 컴퓨팅과 서비스를 네트워크의 말단부(edge)로 확장한 패러다임입니다.
· 포그는 네트워크 장비의 연산과 스토리지 자원에 접근하는 서비스 인프라다. 클라우드처럼 데이터 연산, 스토리지, 애플리케이션 서비스를 제공하지만 중앙 서버를 거치지 않고 사용자에게 클라우드처럼 느껴지는 서비스를 제공합니다.
· 포그컴퓨팅은 기기에서 생성된 데이터를 실시간으로 처리할 수 있는 노드를 기지국처럼 두고 컴퓨팅 파워가 필요한 데이터만 클라우드로 넘겨서 처리하게 하자는 시스코의 사물인터넷 구현 방법이다.
· 요컨대 중앙 서버로 운영되는 클라우드와 지역적으로 분산된 사물 인터넷 기기들을 중간에서 연결하고 매개하는 또 하나의 네트워크입니다. 중앙(Cloud Server) 보다 주변(edge, 개별 기기)에 더 주목한다는 뜻에서 ‘엣지 컴퓨팅(edge computing)’으로 불리기도 합니다.
· 클라우드 컴퓨팅은 노트북, 핸드폰, 태블릿, 게임기 등 모든 디지털 기기들이 각각 서버와 연결, 소프트웨어 업데이트(클라우드 컴퓨팅)를 하는 방식으로 작동한다. 반면 포그 컴퓨팅은 노트북이 소프트웨어 업데이트 파일을 다운로드한 뒤 노트북과 연결된 핸드폰과 태블릿의 소프트 웨어를 업데이트한다.

클라우드 컴퓨팅은 현재 널리 사용되고 있다. 그러나, 사물인터넷(IoT)이라는 새로운 네트워크 환경에서는 클라우드 컴퓨팅만으로 여러 사물이 발생시키는 트래픽 패턴에 적절히 대응할 수 없다. 이런 문제점을 해결하는 방법 중에 포그 컴퓨팅이 있다. 포그 컴퓨팅에서는 서비스 제공을 위한 서버의 위치를 지정하는 데에 있어서 서버 배치 방식 및 위치를 정하는 메커니즘이 필요하다. 그러나, 대부분의 연구에서는 포그 디바이스의 컴퓨팅 리소스만 고려하고, 서비스를 요청하는 Client와 데이터가 발생되는 Data Source의 위치를 고려하지 않아 포그 서버 배치 후 네트워크 상황이 더 나빠질 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 서비스를 요청하는 Client 및 Data Source의 위치에 따른 트래픽 발생을 고려한 포그 서버 배치 기법을제안한다. 실험에서는 Client와 Data Source와 같은 Host의 위치에 따른 네트워크 트래픽을 고려해 네트워크 토폴로지 형성에 있어서 Host의 위치를 집중시키거나 분산시켜 배치한다. 실험을 통해 전체 포그 디바이스에 포그 서버를 배치하는 것보다 제안한 방식(네트워크 트래픽 상황에 따라 포그 서버를 적절히 배치)이 코어 네트워크 트래픽 감소 및 메모리 사용량 측면에서 더 효율적이라는 것을 확인하였다.
Cloud computing is now widely used. However, cloud computing alone cannot adequately respond to the traffic patterns generated by various objects in the new network environment of the internet of things (IoT). Fog computing is one method for overcoming and solving the problems of cloud computing. A fog-server placement method is needed, including a mechanism for determining the location for a fog-server that can provide services. However, most studies only consider the fog device’s computing resources, and the locations of the client and the data sources are not considered; therefore, the network situation becomes worse after the fog-server placement. In this paper, we propose a technique for fog-server placement that considers traffic generation in relation to the locations of the clients and data sources. In the experiment, clients and data sources are concentrated or distributed in the network topology, and their corresponding network-traffic patterns are considered. Experimental results show that, in terms of reducing core network traffic and memory usage, placing the fog server according to the proposed network traffic conditions is more efficient than placing fog servers in all of the fog devices.
